The Crew from Myrtle Creek
This spring, an award winning team has developed in Myrtle Creek. Ten energetic, hardworking and tenacious girls and boys have been playing soccer with the determination of seasoned professionals.
They call themselves “The Crew”, and they play as part of the Roseburg Soccer Associations U11 league, wrapping up their season with an enviable 6-1-1 record, good for first place in the league.
The Crew is coached by Jason Remington and Mike Lanza. These gentlemen give their time to work with the kids to develop skills, sportsmanship, and teamwork. They deserve an award themselves for helping each of the kids realize the potential and strengths they bring to the team. Thanks to Jason and Mike, these kids have a solid understanding that a team working together is much stronger than any of the individuals, a valuable lesson to carry through life.
The Crew has a loyal and large following of fans. Before each game, a large contingent of parents, grandparents, friends, children, babies and a few well-behaved dogs assemble in a grouping of camp chairs, dressed for the weather and ready for action. We cheer our team on, catch up with each other, and have a great time.
The team is remarkable. To watch their self confidence grow as their skills have developed, and to see the dynamic of the team strengthen as they have learned to work together is truly gratifying. Equally exciting was seeing how they learned to balance their lives: successfully grappling with the responsibility of keeping their grades up and fulfilling family responsibilities so they could practice and suit up with the team. I can’t forget to mention that they also had a very large amount of fun.
We hear a lot about the problems with kids today. We shouldn’t lose track of all the great things that are happening. These young people are learning and living skills that will positively serve them for their entire lives. Their parents are working hard, and successfully, to pass on the values that sustain our families, our communities, and our country. These boys and girls are learning and using skills that will keep that bright light burning.
Douglas County is a wonderful place for families!
